Pennsylvania: Where It All Began

Pennsylvania may not be the first state Kiwis think of when planning a US trip, but its tourism office is urging agents to recommend it, highlighting the state as the place ‘where America began’.

Kaitie Burger, executive director for the PA Tourism Office, explains to Travel Today that Philadelphia is the birthplace of American democracy, home to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the National Constitution Center.

“For international visitors, that history is a genuine drawcard,” she says. “In 2026, America’s 250th anniversary year, Pennsylvania is the single most relevant destination in the country.”

. . . Affordability

And while the state’s 250 years of American history is a huge selling point, it is far from the only one, with Burger also highlighting the state’s affordability, saying it offers exceptional value compared to cities such as New York and Los Angeles, and she adds it offers a ‘remarkable geographic range’.

“From the Pocono Mountains and the Laurel Highlands to the farmlands of Lancaster County and the Lake Erie shoreline at Presque Isle, Pennsylvania covers an enormous amount of ground, both literally and experientially.”

. . . Year-round

It’s also a year-round destination, known for its foliage in fall, skiing in winter, spring gar dens, and events across summer.

The location is also relevant, sitting between New York City and Washington DC, with Burger saying it is a natural add-on for clients building East Coast itineraries, and is self-drive friendly.

“The state offers well-maintained roads, diverse scenery, and a density of interesting stops that rewards self-directed travel.”

Pennsylvania also has a reputation for being genuinely welcoming, in the way that small towns and regional communities tend to be when tourism hasn’t yet overwhelmed them.

. . . Agent Advice

As for the key things travel agents selling Pennsylvania should know, Burger encourages agents to look beyond Philadelphia, pointing out that the state has 11 distinct tourism regions.

“Pittsburgh, the Pocono Mountains, Lancaster County, the Laurel Highlands, and the Endless Mountains all deserve space in an itinerary.”

She also recommends that agents flag the restaurant scene, with Philadelphia a world class food city, and she says Pennsylvania’s state park system is one of the best in the country, and free.

“This is a significant value-add for clients who want outdoor experiences without the cost of national park fees.”
