The need for digital identity technologies to be rolled out collaboratively has been highlighted at the Sydney Leaders Week Conference, with the technology touted as something which could enhance aviation security and operational efficiency.
The conference was attended by leading government and industry stakeholders in aviation security, including the International Air Transport Association’s svp operations, safety and security Nick Careen who says global cooperation keeps flying secure.
“Adopting Verifiable Credentials and Decentralised Identifiers (VCADI) standards is a natural next step in reinforcing security, trust, and efficiency,” he adds. “The technology is ready and proven.”
The aviation industry is working with governments to support the adoption of digital identity. These efforts include IATA’s One ID initiative which promotes globally inter-operable digital identity standards, enabling passengers to verify their travel documents pre-departure and move through the airport using biometric recognition instead of physical documents.
But governments have a role to play as well, with the conference noting key steps countries can take to support the roll out of digital identity technologies.
Alongside incorporating VCADI technologies into national and international security frameworks, aviation security experts believe governments should be ‘integrating aviation digital identity solutions into national digital strategies, allocating resources to equip industry stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and infrastructure for seamless implementation, and promoting industry-wide adoption of digital identity solutions through targeted education and outreach’.
