These bustling markets provide a sensory feast of sights, sounds, and flavours, making them a must-visit for those exploring Asia, adds digital travel platform Agoda which has made a list of night markets that it says stand out for their atmosphere, local flavours, and cultural character.

Within Malacca’s UNESCO World Heritage zone is the Jonker Street Night Market, held among historic architecture.

It has a ‘lively’ street food scene, stalls offering antiques, collectibles, and handicrafts and cultural weekend experiences including Chinese opera and traditional music.

Gudeg made from young, unripe jackfruit stewed for several hours with palm sugar, coconut milk and sometimes spiced with garlic, and sweet pastries called bakpia can be found in the Pasar Malam market in Yogyakarta as well as batik clothing, woodcrafts, street musicians and performers.

Traditional Indian jewellery and vibrant textiles are on display at Johari Bazaar in Jaipur, offering intricate handcrafted pieces, including Kundan (gemstone) and Meenakari (enamelled) jewellery, while Thailand’s Chiang Mai Night Bazaar also features intricate silver jewellery as well as traditional crafts and textiles.

Temple Street Night Market in Hong Kong has street performances, traditional fortune tellers, and goods from Chinese handicrafts to modern fashion items.

In Hanoi’s Old Quarter the Hanoi Night Market (pictured) is spread over several streets and offers crafts, clothing, street food including pho and banh mi, and handcrafts, while Divisoria Night Market in Manila is a shopper’s paradise, says Agoda, offering everything from clothing to electronics.

“Night markets bring together many of the things travellers enjoy most about visiting Asia, including local food, street life, and small independent vendors,” says Andrew Smith, senior vp supply at Agoda.

“They offer a relaxed way to explore a destination after dark and often become one of the most memorable parts of a trip.”
