Asia Pacific Travel Enters New Era

Asia Pacific Travel is undergoing a significant structural realignment, the biggest in more than a decade, says Phocuswright.

In its new report, A Market Rewired: Ten Structural Shifts Redefining Asia Pacific Travel, the data analyst outlines how demo graphic divergence, geopolitical tensions, new mobility patterns and financial infrastructure are reshaping how, and where, demand forms across the region.

The study found that Asia Pacific has fractured into demographic and demand patterns. India, Indonesia and Malaysia are youthful markets entering peak consumption years, while Japan, South Korea and Taiwan face irreversible population decline.

It also notes as customer attention fragments and acquisition costs rise, travel companies are increasingly choosing partnerships over ownership.

. . . Geopolitics

Geopolitics is emerging as a defining force, with border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand driving a 36% drop in foreign arrivals to Cambodia in late 2025, while diplomatic strain contributed to a forecasted 3% decline in Japan’s 2026 inbound visitors, largely due to weak Chinese demand.

. . . On The Rise

Rail’s share of Asia Pacific travel gross bookings is projected to rise slightly, supported by new cross-border links and integrated air-rail partnerships.

Short-term stays are expected to reach 25% of Asia Pacific accommodation bookings by 2028, totalling EUR48.9 billion.

“What stands out across these trends is how many of them are already visible in day-to-day travel decisions, even if they are not always labelled as such,” says Pete Comeau, md of Phocuswright.

“Together, they offer a useful lens for interpreting how the Asia Pacific travel landscape is quietly changing, often in ways that only become obvious in hindsight. The companies that succeed will be those that understand these shifts early and adapt their strategies accordingly.”
