AmaWaterways is launching a new City Escapes program, described as more relaxed sailings taking place over quieter travel periods, as it reports increased Australasian demand for longer stays in Europe’s most iconic river cities.
AmaWaterways md for Australia and New Zealand Steve Richards, says City Escapes aligns closely with what it is hearing from guests.
“Travellers are telling us they want more time to enjoy the places they visit,” he says. “More time, deeper cultural experiences and the chance to truly connect with each destination.”
The City Escapes collection features 2026/27 cruises that offer more time in cities along the Seine, Rhine and Danube rivers, with additional overnight stays, more daylight sailing and 24 hours or more in key cities.
They are also timed to sail when there are fewer crowds, with AmaWaterways ceo Catherine Powell saying City Escapes is about experiencing Europe at its most authentic. “Luxury is the gift of time. That is exactly what we aim to offer with this new program.”
On the Seine, guests will enjoy extended time in Paris, Rouen and Normandy, while on the Rhine there’s more time in destinations such as Breisach, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Cologne and Amsterdam. Sailings along the Danube boast extended stays in Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Linz and Passau.
There will also be special experiences in each city, such as chateau visits in Rouen, culinary tours in Cologne, explorations of Budapest’s historic Buda district and walking tours of Bratislava’s old town with local beer tastings.
