Pure Dead Brilliant Glasgow On Show

Kiwis travelling to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are in for a surprise, as Scotland’s most populous city turns on its charm and shows them in no uncertain terms why it no longer deserves its former reputation as rough and ready.

Glasgow is a UNESCO City of Music and was the first place in the UK to earn the title due to its exceptionally vibrant, diverse music scene—home of Scotland’s most successful band, Simple Minds — and deep-rooted cultural heritage.

It has world-class museums and galleries-many of which are free-an excellent food scene, breweries and, of course, whisky bars.

Its distinctive neighbourhoods include the designer shops of Merchant City, Riverside and its famous transport museum with its wall of cars, and the West End, home to Kelvinbridge named one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods by Time Out magazine.

The city centre is easily walkable, there are buses, and bike-hire opportunities. The Subway takes just 24 minutes to complete a circuit of the 15 stations and travel can be per journey or via a top-up Smartcard.
