Holland America Line has added two extra voyages taking in the 2027 solar eclipse, as its vp deployment Paul Grigsby says the excitement around viewing a total solar eclipse the past few years has been palpable.
“When you’re at sea, there is a greater opportunity to witness an eclipse in the clear because the ship can attempt to position itself away from cloud cover,” he says. “Because of that, these cruises are extremely popular for everyone from professional astronomers to travellers looking to check an eclipse off their bucket list.” Itineraries include the 28-Day Legendary Solar Eclipse & Cosmic Port Explorer, ex Rotterdam on 10 Jul 2027, with departures also available ex Dover. This voyage will call into ports across Denmark, the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Morocco (where the eclipse will be viewed).
The 14-day Solar Eclipse & Astro-nomical Discovery ex Athens on 31 Jul, explores Tunisia, with the eclipse viewed near here, as well as Malta, Italy and Greece. Both voyages will include lectures from experts, themed activities and eclipse glasses. Some featured ports have connections to the study of the sun and stars; for example, Portland is close to Stonehenge, and Messina is home to the world’s largest and most complex astronomical clock. The two new itineraries join three existing options that are already on sale for the 2026 eclipse, the 28-day Scandinavian Solar Eclipse with Greenland and Scotland, the 35-day Voyage of the Vikings: Solar Eclipse and the 13-day Solar Eclipse with Barcelona Overnight.

HAL has also added three 14-day Arctic Journey and Northern Lights cruises in 2027. They feature an overnight in Alta and spend five days above the Arctic Circle, during which guests can sign up to get a wake-up call from the ship any time the aurora borealis is spotted. Departures take place 03 and 16 Oct and 06 Nov.
