AmaWaterways has commenced cruises on Colombia’s Magdalena River, with the debut of AmaMagdalena in the region—and Kiwis are already showing interest.
The vessel is said to be the first luxury river cruise ship to navigate the river, and ceo Rudi Schreiner says it represents a new chapter for the world of river cruising. “AmaMagdalena opens the door to a culturally rich destination, and we’ve worked closely with local communities to ensure our presence benefits everyone involved…”. AmaWaterways’ md ANZ Steve Richards adds that its regional office has seen strong bookings for Colombia this year, appealing to well-travelled clients who have been everywhere and done everything. “They’re looking for new stories and experiences, and to travel off the beaten track. That’s what a Colombian river cruise will offer.”
. . . The Ship
AmaMagdalena was designed for the region, in collaboration with Colombian craftspeople. Highlights of the 60-guest vessel include staterooms ranging 22-48m2, a sun deck pool, fitness room, a main restaurant offering Latin American and western cuisine, and an al fresco specialty dining venue.
She will sail two seven-night itineraries, Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Experiences include a celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, a heritage tour, jazz performance in the UNESCO-designated city of Mompox, and birdwatching. Pre- and post-cruise packages are available in Medellín, Cartagena and Panama City. AmaMagdalena will be joined by AmaMelodia on the Magdalena River later this year.
