The New Zealand Government has started 2025 with a renewed focus on tourism and a goal of making Aotearoa easier to visit, a move which has been welcomed by Flight Centre Travel Group New Zealand md Victoria Courtney.
Minister for Economic Growth, Nicola Willis wants to increase visitor numbers to strengthen New Zealand’s economy.
Courtney is backing this stance, saying that Flight Centre has seen the importance of outbound travel to economic recovery.
“The symbiotic relationship between inbound and outbound tourism cannot be overlooked,” says Courtney.
“Out bound travel stimulates airline confidence to increase capacity, resulting in balanced routes that lower airfare costs and enhance freight options for exporters.”
. . Advice
The struggle in increasing visitation lies in our isolated geographical location and as such, Courtney says key areas of focus for any increased investment in tourism should include streamlining visa processes to make New Zealand more accessible.
She also recommends the government invests in marketing campaigns to showcase the best of Aotearoa and prioritise immigration settings to tackle workforce shortages in tourism and hospitality.
Her final recommendation is to work with the private sector and leverage its expertise to unlock tourism’s full potential. “Tourism providers, airlines, and travel agencies share a common goal of making New Zealand a top-tier destination,” she adds. “Together, we can overcome barriers and position the sector for sustainable growth.”
