The carrier will take delivery of more than 250 new aircraft by Apr 2028, the most it claims of any airline in a two-year period.

This includes 40 Coastliner A321 and 28 A321XLR, which will replace 40 older and less efficient 757s, as well as 47 787-9s with an elevated interior.

UA adds that 33 will be configured with additional premium seats. It also expects to take delivery of 119 737MAX and 18 A321neos.

The order, says UA ceo Scott Kirby, accelerates its plans and elevates UA’s offerings to the next level, creating a more consistent premium onboard experience. UA executive vp and cco Andrew Nocella says the new planes and products offer more premium amenity and seat choices.

“UA is setting the pace and innovating for our customers at a scope and scale unheard of in aviation history—and we’re not taking our foot off the gas.”

The aircraft order coincides with the unveiling of United Relax Row, (pictured), which is Air New Zealand’s Skycouch product rebranded.

An NZ spokesperson say UA’s decision to license the product reflects the strength of the duo’s long-standing partnership and the appeal of offering customers a better way to travel.

“We’re not the only ones who think stretching out in economy is a good idea,” adds NZ.

. . . The Couch

Those travelling in the United Relax Row product will receive a fitted mattress pad, plush blanket, two extra pillows, a plush toy and children’s travel kit for families.

UA says it is the first North American airline to offer the couches, and notes that it holds North American exclusivity on the design.

UA plans to launch the offering in 2027 and feature it on more than 200 787 and 777 widebody aircraft by 2030. This compares to NZ’s 10 777 aircraft and 14 787-9 aircraft that are fitted with Skycouch.

Nocella says UA is committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all customers, and the United Relax Row is the perfect example of that.
