Agents with clients wishing to drive the US’ famous Route 66 to celebrate the ‘Mother Road’s’ centenary should recommend that they fly into Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and begin their epic drive from the little town of Grapevine, says the local tourist body.
The vintage Texas town is just minutes from DFW, and the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau says travellers can be through Customs in 15 minutes and check into any of 21 Grapevine hotels in just another 10 minutes, where they can rest up before hitting the road.
From Grapevine, travellers can rent their cars (saving on airport fees by renting in Grapevine, says the GCVB) and then head north to Oklahoma to experience the quintessential American road trip, heading northeast to Chicago or west to Los Angeles. During their Grapevine stopover drivers can visit Target, CVS or Walgreens for any last-minute needs before the road trip. The GCVB recommends a few days exploring the boutique shops, artisan cafés, and art galleries. Travellers are also urged to visit Esparza’s Restaurante Mexicano, the Margarita Capital of Texas; savour a famous Bowl of Red (chili) at Tolbert’s Restaurant and Chili Parlor; and enjoy brunch under a 1928 Model T Ford at Willhoite’s Restaurant, housed in Grapevine’s first service station next to the historic Calaboose jail.
There are also live performances at the Texas Star Dinner Theatre, the Historic Palace Theatre and Third Rail at Harvest Hall.
