Scenic On Kiwis’ Expedition Appetite

Strong sales have shown Kiwis have an appetite for expedition cruising, says the Scenic Group, which is looking to further grow the segment as its ships sail local waters.

Speaking to Travel Today, Scenic Group gm sales and marketing APAC Anthony Laver says New Zealand has always been a strong market, for Antarctica specifically, and has continues to grow over recent times, thanks to the convenience of new departures ex New Zealand and Hobart.

Agents too are boosting Scenic’s sales locally, with Laver saying the interest and support from the group’s travel partners and consultants has grown significantly in the past year, which he adds has been key to guiding Scenic’s growth in the market.

Scenic’s luxury experience is also said to be contributing to the sale increase, with Laver highlighting Scenic Eclipse which offers two onboard helicopters and a submersible, something which sets it apart from other operators.

“Once a potential guest understands the value of Scenic Eclipse, for the agent the ability to convert is aided,” adds Laver.

. . .Goals

A goal for 2025 is to continue growing Kiwi interest in yacht cruising, and Laver says sales are off to a strong start, following Scenic Eclipse II in Auckland last month, and the success of Emerald Yacht Cruises.

“We are seeing the New Zealand trade and client embrace the concept of Yacht Cruising,” says Laver. “We are set to have an excellent season for 2024/2025, with bookings for the 2025/2026 season already very strong.” As to how Scenic will continue this momentum, Laver says the cruise lone has famils, and increased cooperative campaigns and marketing support planned.

Scenic Eclipse will return to New Zealand in 2026, and Scenic is already exploring opportunities for Scenic Eclipse to return to Oceania in future seasons as well.
