Philadelphia: The Ideal NYC Addition

Getting to New York has never been easier for Kiwis thanks to the direct flights by Air New Zealand and Qantas, but the Big Apple also provides easy access to nearby destinations such as Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is located just an hour and a half from New York City via the Amtrak train, and the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau says more Kiwis are pairing their New York City visit with a Philadelphia stay.

“Having travel agents recommend Philadelphia as an add on to their East Coast travels is great,” says the bureau.

The PCVB says the city caters to an array of travellers. For example, sports travel is on the rise, and Philadelphia is full of traditional US sporting codes that PCVB says Kiwis should experience once in their life.

“From American football and basketball to baseball and ice hockey, there is a sporting event available for every season.” History lovers will also be spoilt for choice, as the city, the birthplace of the US, is home to 68 National Historic Landmarks. “We were also named the Most Walkable City to Visit by USA Today two years in a row,” it’s perfect for exploring on foot.”

. . . Guide Tours

There are guided tours which dive into the city’s rich history, with recommended options including WeVenture’s History, Highlights & Revolution and Beyond the Bell Tour’s Beyond the Liberty Bell Tour.

Philadelphia has some of the greatest public art programs in the country, including the Mural Arts Philadelphia, boasting more than 4000 murals across the city.

The PCVB also highlights the Phila-delphia Museum of Art, Barnes Foundation and Rodin Museum. And, of course, there’s food, most notably the iconic cheesesteak. With hundreds of cheesesteak hubs across the city, each with its own style, going on a ‘cheesesteak hunt’ to find your favourite is a fun and delicious experience promises PCVB.
