Malta, located south of Sicily and north of Africa, will have a one-stop connection to Auckland via Doha, when Qatar Airways commences services to the European island nation.
With an estimated 300 days of clear skies and crystal clear water, agents at the Visit Malta event last week say the appeal of Malta is as a European ‘detour destination’ or somewhere to start and end a European break. “People are often looking for the ‘next’ thing in Europe, and as Europe gets busy Malta looks like an ideal place to start or finish a Europe trip,” says The Private Travel Company’s Kerry Graham. Visiting High Commissioner of Malta to Australia and New Zealand Mario Farrugia Borg impressed those at the event with his overview of the islands where English is an official language and sports a mix of Italian, English and Arab cuisine. There’s a year-round calendar of events, touring and water-based activities. It’s also become popular as a film set, and features in movies such as Gladiator as well as the latest Jurassic Park film.
