Next-gen Travel With NZ: Biometric Trials

Following a successful trial in Mar, Air New Zealand says it’s now looking to launch a broader pilot program to trial the use of biometric facial scans instead of traditional passport checks—in a bid to expedite the travel process.

NZ’s chief customer and digital officer Jeremy O’Brien says the trial marks an important step toward a simpler, more connected travel experience. “Our ambition is to make travel easier from start to finish. That means fewer document checks, less time queuing and a smoother experience overall.”

The trial shows how digital identity could help create a more seamless journey, while improving security through encrypted data and customer-controlled information sharing, he adds.

. . . How It Works

In the Mar pilot, participants travel ling return AKL-HKG shared their digital ID during on-line check-in.

That verified information supported further biometric scans throughout the journey. The trial integrated with the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, the IATA Travel Directory, Hong Kong International Airport’s Flight Token framework and NZ’s check-in.

It also supported the use of Apple Wallet’s Digital ID, adds NZ.

. . . Next Steps

NZ is now exploring a broader pilot and options to trial the technology across different ports, with Australia a key focus for the next phase.

The carrier says it’s working with partners to test a digital identity that allows travellers to add their passport details into the Air NZ app and securely share verified identity information at on-line check-in.

Passengers can then use that information to support biometric verification at selected points across the journey.

NZ is working closely with government agencies and industry partners to further develop the solution, as well as sharing insights from the trial with global aviation bodies, including IATA.

. . . Privacy

Privacy and consent are central to the digital ID trial, adds NZ. Passengers remain in control of their information, ‘including when, how and with whom it is shared. Essential security protocols are also maintained throughout the process’.
