Travellers hoping to visit Machu Picchu in 2025 need to act fast, as entry tickets and Inca Trail permits are selling out quicker than ever, says Viva Expediations.
Apr/May entry tickets to the Incan citadel have already sold out, and permits for the classic Inca Trail trek are fully booked until Jul. With the peak travel season approaching, availability Jun-Aug is rapidly diminishing, it adds.
“Access to Machu Picchu has evolved significantly over the years,” says Viva gm Tara Sutherland, who adds that visitors can no longer just show up on the day and purchase tickets.
“Now, there are specific tickets for different areas of the archaeological site. For instance, if you want to visit the Sun Gate, you’ll need a ticket for the corresponding circuit. It can be overwhelming, but our destination specialists are here to guide you through the process and ensure you get the right tickets for your clients.”
In recent years, Peru’s government has implemented stricter entry regulations to protect the popular site from over-tourism. Daily visitor numbers are now capped, and ticket types vary based on the circuits chosen. Demand often exceeds supply months in advance for the classic four-day Inca Trail trek, it adds. Alternative treks, such as the Salkantay or Lares routes, are still said to offer stunning scenery and cultural experiences for those unable to secure an Inca Trail permit.
Sutherland strongly urges agents to get clients to book well in advance to ensure they secure their preferred dates and activities.
“With growing demand and limited availability, early booking is crucial. Whether your clients want to hike or take the train, securing your Machu Picchu entry is the first step.”
Viva currently has10% off its nine-day Signature Peru itinerary for travel Dec–Mar; conditions apply.
