New Zealanders are still travelling above pre-Covid levels, although the numbers of Kiwis returning from the United States and Fiji dipped for Apr, compared to last year.
Stats NZ figures out today show New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals reached 244,800 in Apr, up 2700 from Apr 2024. The total number of New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals for the month under review was 101% of the pre-pamdemic 243,300 in Apr 2019.

The biggest changes in Kiwi resident Apr arrivals were from China (up 1900), Japan (up 1700), Australia (up 1600), Indonesia (up 1000), the US (down 1200) and Fiji (down 1000), says Stats NZ. Of the Kiwi resident arrivals in Apr, the Stats NZ data shows 47% were from Australia (compared with 47% in Apr 2019), 6% were from Fiji (the same as the 6% in 2019), 6 % were from China (up from 5% in 2019), from the United States 5% (was 7% in 2019) and Japan 4% (up from 2% in 2019).

While New Zealanders are travelling overseas in high numbers, inbound tourism is still below pre- Covid levels, says Stats NZ. Overseas Apr visitor arrivals were 267,300, an increase of 42,200 on Apr 2024 with a big surge in arrivals from Australia (up 33,800) and increases from Britain (4000) and the US (up 3300). The total number of overseas visitor arrivals in Apr 2025 was 87% of the 307,400 in Apr 2019, before the global pandemic.
