Airline fraud rates are dropping, with a new report finding that there is an average of just one fraud attempt for every 400 airline bookings made worldwide, and closer to home the risk is even lower.
A study by Accertify, a provider of fraud prevention and digital identity solutions, found that among major airports with more than one million bookings in Asia Pacific, the lowest fraud attempt rates were recorded at Auckland Airport—which claimed the title alongside Haneda Airport, though the actual rate was not stated. Overall, the data shows that risks appear to be lessening over time, with global fraud rates dropping 30% year-over-year to 0.25%, with this decline led by Europe where fraud rates flights fell by half compared to the same period last year. The USA was not far behind, with fraud rates there falling by 38% to 0.18%.

This is not to say agents and travellers should not still be cautious, with Accertify president Mark Michelon saying their data shows that fraudsters are highly adaptive and constantly evolving their tactics. In fact, even with AKL seeing some of the lowest attempt rates, Accertify still found that fraud attempt rates year-over-year rose a notable 50%. “Even as overall fraud pressure decreases, they’re testing for new vulnerabilities and shifting their focus to exploit specific routes and gaps in security,” says Michelon. “This makes robust fraud
