Exploring San Diego’s Precincts

San Diego is home to more than 100 unique neighbourhoods, and for travellers feeling a little overwhelmed, the San Diego Tourism Authority is highlighting some of the most exciting to recommend to clients.

Barrio Logan, located south of Downtown San Diego, is a Mexican American neighborhood which is one of 14 California Cultural Districts. For clients staying in or near this area, recommend Chicano Park, a National Historic Landmark which is home to the largest collection of outdoor murals in the world. It’s also worth checking out the area’s galleries, artist studios and art events. On the dining front Las Cuatro Milpas is the go-to for tamales, there’s tacos at Fish Guts and craft beer from Mujeres Brew House. North Park, northeast of Downtown San Diego, is known for its trendy bars, restaurants, cafes and craft breweries. Recommendations include the farmers market on University Ave, live music venue The Observatory North Park and the shopping, with stores to check out including Verbatim Books and the nostalgic Replay Toys. Drink at North Park Beer Company or Mike Hess Brewing and eat at Mabel’s Gone Fishing which offers seafood-centric tapas, or Siamo Napoli, which has Southern Italian dishes. In Kearny Mesa’s Convoy District, recommend is a dining and retail hub unofficially named Asian Row. Highlighted stops include revolving sushi bar Kura, the new Yakitori Tsuta and dim sum spot Jasmine Seafood Restaurant, as well as HIVE, which houses a bar, arcade games and karaoke. An honorable mention goes to speakeasy Realm of the 52 Remedies, inspired by a collection of ancient Chinese herbal recipes.

. . . Seaside

La Jolla is home to some of the region’s most scenic beaches. Send clients here to watch the harbour seals at Children’s Pool, swim and surf at La Jolla Shores, or on a guided tour of the sea caves with La Jolla Kayak or Bike and Kayak Tours Inc. There’s also upscale boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. Top picks include the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, classic diner Harry’s Coffee Shop and the iconic Marine Room, where diners are nearly at eye-level with the surf during high tide. An honorable mention goes to the historic Gaslamp Quarter which is packed with restaurants, shops and nightlife options, and Little Italy.
