Cruise is the top way to see the world, shows the findings of a recent by Norwegian Cruise Line survey of New Zealanders and Australians.

The research found that 73% of those polled believed cruise is the best way to travel, and more than a quarter stating that going forward, they would only be travelling via cruise.

The survey also found that participants are putting their money where their mouth is, with 78% planning to sail this year, and 26% planning to sail next year.

Delving into why Kiwis and Aussies love cruising, the survey found the main reason, at 76%, was the ability to easily visit destinations of interest and unpack once.

Other driving factors behind the sector’s popularity included the value of cruising compared to land-based itineraries, as well as the quality of food and dining experiences on board. As to the style of holiday these keen cruisers want, relaxation and leisure was cited as the primary reason to travel at 80%, followed by experiencing new cultures at 68%, adventure and exploration at 65%, and escaping the daily routine at 39%.

. . .Where & Who

NCL’s survey also found that the Mediterranean was the most sought-after destination overall for past Australasian cruisers, followed by Asia, Northern Europe and the Baltics. And most respondents said they prefer to sail with their partner, at 69%, with some 47% adding that cruising is a great way to rekindle the romance. Some 40% enjoy cruising with friends, 28% with immediate family, 15% with extended family, and 9% are happy to go it alone.
