Cruise Into Literary Tourism With NCL

Norwegian Cruise Line is looking to get book-worms out of the house and onto one of its ships, as it highlights a selection of itineraries which it says cater to the rising trend of literary tourism—travel to destinations featured in popular novels.

For fans of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafin or Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend, NCL recommends its 10-day Mediterranean Cruise: Italy, France and Greece which sails ex Venice on 09 Oct. The voyage calls into 11 ports, including Barcelona where The Shadow of the Wind is based, and Naples which Ferrante’s acclaimed Neapolitan series explores. For those who love Jennifer Probst’s To Sicily with Love, the 10-day Greek Isles & Italy: Santorini, Athens & Florence itinerary ex Rome on 22 Aug or 01 Oct includes a day in Messina where guests experience Italian cooking, markets and fishing ports just like Probst’s protagonist Aurora. Exploring Busan and Osaka, two destinations featured in the popular novel Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, is the 14-day Japan. It sails round-trip from Tokyo on 29 Oct, and calls at Kochi and Nagoya. For the romance reader, specifically fans of Hawai’i-based tale The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, NCL’s seven-day Hawaii inter-island round-trip cruise, departs weekly. Rounding out the list is NCL’s seven-day Alaska Cruise: Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka and Victoria. The voyage which sails roundtrip ex Seattle is the go-to for those who enjoyed The Great Alone: Alaska by Kristin Hannah, with departures available Apr-Sep.
