Auckland Airport’s domestic airfield’s $147 million upgrade is underway, a move the airport’s ceo Carrie Hurihanganui says is necessary to ensure all New Zealand’s regions have reliable and efficient connectivity into the future.
The airport’s recently-released draft Master Plan anticipates that regional travel will grow from 2.7 million people in FY28 to close to four million by 2047. “With around 40% of regional flights starting and ending in Auckland, this investment is about backing our regions and building the infrastructure they need to thrive well into the future.” The project, slated for completion in 2028, includes four new aircraft parking stands dedicated to regional services, changes to car parking, and flooding and stormwater resilience. The AKL new regional airfield is a separate project from the airport’s much larger airfield expansion taking place to the west of the precinct, which is slated to open later this year to provide essential overnight aircraft parking and stands for cargo aircraft.
. . . Changes
Over this time, regional flights will operate as normal, however, car parking near the domestic terminal will change later this year with Car Park M closing. It will reopen later with a reduced footprint. Public parking will continue to be available in the northern section of Car Park M and at Car Park K, and transport lanes and forecourts outside the domestic terminal will not be affected.
