AKL Airport Preps For Holidays Peak

School holiday preparations are underway at Auckland Airport, as the hub outlines plans to the cater for the 437,000 international travellers and another 409,000 domestic travellers over the period.

It’s the first time Easter and Anzac Day have both fallen within the school holiday period since 2022, and AKL’s chief operations officer Chloe Surridge says the airport company is working closely with airlines and their ground handling providers, as well as government agencies at the airport, ‘to make it as smooth as possible for travellers’.

The Ministry for Primary Industries will operate express lanes during AKL Airport Preps for Holidays Peak the busiest periods at international arrivals, with additional staff on hand to help support customers, she adds. CT scanners will be trialled in some domestic lanes, allowing laptops, powders, liquids and gels to stay in carry-on baggage. Passengers can play a part, too, in expediting the process, by allowing plenty of time. International travellers pre-downloading the New Zealand Traveller Declaration form or the app will help streamline processing, as will ensuring powders, liquids and gels in carry-on bags do not exceed 100mls, adds AKL.

Expected traveller numbers overall are about the same level as last year’s Apr holiday break, adds Surridge, who notes the busiest days as 27, 12 and 13 Apr for international departures and 13, 26 and 17 Apr for international arrivals; while 11, 17 and 18 Apr are set to be the busiest days for domestic departures, and 11, 14 and 17 Apr for arrivals. Australia, America and China are the top three international destinations, while Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown are the most popular domestic destinations, adds AKL.
