It’s been a century since Irishman Alan Pye founded Huka Lodge as a fisherman’s camp of tents alongside the Waikato River, which is a long way from the now luxury lodge that has just undergone a $25 million refurbishment.
The hotel, now owned by Australia-based Baillie Lodges, has seen its share of celebrities and royalty over the years—and after the 10-month refurbishment and refresh the doors are have reopened.
. . . Changes
On entering, guests will catch a first glimpse of the Waikato River via the floor-to-ceiling windows in the new River Room, which Baillie Lodges’ says is a signature theme for it, welcoming the outside in.
The main lodge now sports an expanded dining room and bar overlooking the river and parklike gardens. Upstairs private lounging areas include The Loft and Piper Room, ‘ideal for intimate dinners, special celebrations or an exclusive meeting’, says Baillie Lodges. The terrace outside the River Room has a double-sided open fire and tables for al fresco dining and drinks.
. . . Wellness
The new wellness grounds include a gym and two spa treatment rooms, a sauna, surprise ice contrast shower and a steaming plunge pool.
Three new bespoke experiences have been introduced: The Craggy Range culinary escape with food, wine and scenic heli flights; the Epic Rotorua culture and adventure day; and the ultimate Huka eExperience with heli lift-off ‘taking guests’ experience of Taupō to spectacular new heights’.
Huka Lodge legacy owner Alex van Heeren say he was pleased to see the careful refurbishment, and clever design that made the most of the beautiful Waikato River and superb gardens. See more HERE
