2.5 Million Expected In AKL Peak Period

Auckland Airport expects to process more than 2.5 million travellers 08 Dec-18 Jan, and agents can help clients by passing on some advice.

One and a half million international travellers are expected, up 7.5% year-on-year, and one million domestic travellers (up 4.7%). The expected busiest days for international departures are 04 Jan, 20 Dec and 03 Jan and for international arrivals, 14 Jan, 04 Jan followed by 21 Dec. Busiest domestic departure days are expected to be 19 Dec, 21 Dec and 08 Dec, and for arrivals 16 Jan, 08 Dec and 19 Dec.

. . . Top Tips

AKL chief customer officer Scott Tasker says his top tip for travelling is to check there are no batteries in check-in bags. “It’s not just batteries, but any devices powered by lithium batteries—power banks, earbuds, hearing aids, vapes, otherwise you risk them being removed by security from checked-in bags.” See more HERE.

  • He also recommends to urge travellers to check with airlines for up-to-date rules on travelling with batteries and use of power banks.
  • The airport is also encouraging travellers to arrive early, to pack batteries and devices in their carry-ons, and to check that their carry on liquids, aerosols and gels are within regulations.
  • Clients can also prepare for security screenings by emptying pockets, removing belts and ankle boots, and keeping jackets ready for trays. Aviation Security’s new CT scanners mean most travellers no longer need to remove laptops, tablets or phones from their bags.

Agents may like to remind clients travelling internationally to complete their NZ Traveller Declaration online or via the app for a faster arrival process, see HERE.

AKL says a longer peak period than 2024 is expected, as well as busier days, due to airlines operating to AKL adding an extra 207,000 international seats across the summer months, increasing capacity to 5.8 million seats across 43 destinations.
