About Us
Tabs on Travel has been part of the fabric of New Zealand’s travel industry since 1987 keeping travel agents informed, connected, and supported through every high and low the industry has faced.
We are the team behind Travel Today, New Zealand’s most trusted and top-ranked trade publication, delivering essential industry news to travel professionals, and the wider industry, across the country.
Our journey began just two weeks after the infamous Black Monday stock market crash in November 1987, with the launch of our original weekly print publication, Tabs on Travel.
Back then, the industry ran on faxes, MAARS was cutting-edge technology, and airline commissions flowed freely. Each week we stuffed hundreds of envelopes with that week’s issue along with up to 2.5kg of brochures and posted them out to travel agencies nationwide.
It was hands-on, labour-intensive, and deeply connected to the heartbeat of the industry. From those humble beginnings, we’ve never wavered in our mission: to keep travel agents informed with clear, credible, and timely news.
When the internet came along and critics predicted the end of travel agents, we didn’t believe it and time has proven that agents remain at the core of quality travel experiences.
We’ve stood alongside them as the industry evolved through the rise of on-line booking, the slash in airline commissions, the explosion of cruising, the challenges of COVID-19, and the post-pandemic reinvention of a leaner, smarter, more resilient travel industry.
Now, with AI entering the travel conversation, we continue to track and explain what it means for the trade.
Importantly, we never stopped publishing, not even during the pandemic. While the world paused, we kept going. Travel agents were still showing up for their clients, and we showed up for them.
Founded by the ever-connected Tony Dominey, Tabs on Travel was built on relationships, long phone calls, and an encyclopaedic knowledge of the industry (most of which remains unprinted).
His daughter, Angela Dominey, joined the business in 1998 and is now the editor, continuing the family tradition of storytelling, integrity, and unwavering support for the trade.
Today, Tabs on Travel is unofficially a third-generation family business with Lucca, Laine, and budding photographer Ryder regularly lending a hand.
While we may not technically be in the travel industry, we’ve worked alongside agents, tour operators, airlines, wholesalers, and suppliers for over 35 years and we’re very much part of it. Our publication is created by a team who understands the real-world needs of New Zealand’s travel professionals.
Through faxes, emails, headlines, heartbreaks, triumphs, and transitions, we’ve remained loyal to the agents who are the backbone of this industry. That will never change.
At Tabs on Travel, our job is simple: keep the trade informed. And we take it personally.
