OAG On Notable New Airline Routes

This northern summer some 1323 new routes will open up, shows the latest OAG data, with Asia Pacific and Europe the regions boasting most of this increased connectivity.

Europe has the highest level of new route growth this northern summer, with more than 400 new international routes. Italy is in the lead with 53 new routes, followed by Spain and Germany with 45 and 44, respectively.

The region will also see 40 new domestic routes, it adds. Wizz Air is said to be driving the growth, as OAG reports that across Italy, Spain, Germany, the UK, and France the carrier is the single biggest contributor to new route launches, adding 82 this northern summer.

Ryanair and easyJet are also showing significant growth, with honorable mentions going to Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines for their new transatlantic routes into Europe.

. . . Asia Pacific

The Asia Pacific region is set to welcome 170 new international routes, says OAG; not a bad number, but it’s in new domestic routes that the region really shines, with some 376 debuting this northern summer. OAG attributes this to the continued recovery and growth potential of Asia Pacific’s domestic aviation markets.

Elsewhere, North America is adding 122 new domestic routes this northern summer and nine international, while Latin America will welcome 55 new domestic and 52 new international routes, and Africa will welcome 86 new routes in total, 68 of which are international.

The Middle East sits at the bottom of the list, with just 14 new routes set to debut.
