Gibraltar Potential Border Changes

Passengers to Gibraltar airports may be subject to dual border control checks under a new draft agreement between the UK and EU.

A deal is being discussed to avoid a hard border between Gibraltar and Spain which is currently required by the EU’s entry/exit system and would affect 15,000 people who cross the border to make up over half of Gibraltar’s workforce.

The new agreement would create a fluid border with a tailored customs model that eliminates goods checks at the land border, says the proposal. For those arriving via the airport, Gibraltar will manage immigration and policing and Spanish officials will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of the Schengen Area. In a press release the UK Government says this will be a model similar to French authorities operating in London’s St Pancras station.

The deal is expected to lead to direct flights between Gibraltar and EU destinations. See the treaty HERE.
