Agents may like to remind Kiwis who enter the European Union from Oct that they won’t have their passport stamped, but will have biometric data collected in a new system.
The EU will introduce a digital border system called the Entry/Exit System (EES). The EES will create a digital record of biometric data, such as fingerprints and an image of the traveller’s face. New Zealand government website SafeTravel says the EES will replace passport stamping but travellers won’t need to carry any extra information for the EES. Their biometric data is collected by a self-service system or customs official.

In 2026, the EU will also start requiring travellers to have travel authorisation to enter. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) applies to non EU nationals and the EU says most online applications will be processed in minutes and at the longest 96 hours. ETIAS is currently not in operation, so no applications are being collected, and no action is required from travellers at this point. It will cost EUR20 when it comes into force.
