Air NZ Teaming Up With Air Chathams

Air Chathams is in discussions with Air New Zealand around a interline agreement, a move that would be welcomed by those in the trade.

The talks were confirmed by NZ’s chief transformation and alliances officer Mike Williams, who says it is in discussions with 3C about ‘potential opportunities to work more closely with them’. “Regional connectivity is important in a country like New Zealand,” he adds. “Smaller operators play a critical role and do an excellent job.” Chief commercial officer 3C Duane Emeny says this collaboration is vital as regions that no longer have NZ flying into their local airports would once again be visible via the national carrier’s reputable global brand.

“That will ensure that our key, albeit smaller, regions don’t miss out on future investment opportunities and are connected to the world in a more seamless way than is available currently.”

Interline deals between large carriers and small regional feeder airlines are critical enablers for regional growth and community wellbeing, especially in New Zealand,” he adds. “We feel everyone wins in this scenario and most importantly the customer wins.”

. . . Trade

The potential partnership is being welcomed by the local trade, with Angie Forsyth, gm at Corporate Traveller New Zealand, saying it would be a hugely beneficial for frequent travellers in provincial communities, particularly in places like Kāpiti Coast, Whakatāne and Whanganui, where 3C is the only airline currently offering services to Auckland.

“An interline arrangement would streamline the travel experience for regional travellers—allowing them to check in once and have their baggage transferred all the way through to their final destination, no matter where in the world that may be.”
